The Art of Zaatari

Zaatari refugee camp is situated in the Jordanian desert just a few miles from the Syrian border. The camp opened on 28th July 2012 to host refugees fleeing the violence in Syria.

Many people who have lived here since then have painted murals on shelters, bus stops and shop walls depicting life before the civil war and incredible images of escapism. Water is understandably a major subject matter with the lack of it being stuck here in the heat of the desert.

These images were mostly taken on the go – That is to say through the open window of the jeep we were travelling in. Photography is restricted to transit periods only in the camp with the acceptation of a five minute stop just inside the main gates where I was able to get an overall look of Zaatari.
